This is my fourth year teaching kindergarten at Paul Banks Elementary in Homer. I love it!! I enjoy how much influence you can have on the little ones developing brains and sense of self worth. I previously taught in Chenega Bay, AK for four years.I loved my village experience but I enjoy not having to be the maintenance, janitor, cook and PreK-6 teacher! It's a blessing for me to be able to focus in on kindergarten!
PL Strategy to share:
I love learning about trauma informed care. When I was a child I was severly abused and that has affected my life greatly. I had a teacher who took me under her wing and helped me build resilience. I want to be a life raft for some of these kiddos who are experiencing trauma and or challenging behaviors. I believe that there is no such thing as a bad kid! Kids need help understanding their world and how to funtion within it. Kids who struggle are my favorite ones because they challenge me to grow and learn new strategies every year!
Current Driving Question:
I'm currently learning about the "science of reading". My most driving question for this year is, " What is the best balance between sight word instruction, whole language experiences and phonics instruction that will help all students reach their highest potential in kindergarten."
